Switching from conventional diesel or gasoline fuels to more CO2 efficient transport fuels can dramatically reduce CO2 emissions. But different fuels require different vehicle concepts. For pick-up and delivery operations in urban areas, TNT identified electric vehicles as the most effective way to minimise their carbon impact. When electricity from renewable sources is used, well-to-wheel CO2 emissions per kilometre driven are greatly reduced. After extensive pilot activity, TNT in 2010 operates 51 electric delivery trucks in their UK operations, and have pilots underway in China and the Netherlands where they operate large vehicle fleets. Over the next three years, TNT have committed to purchase 600 electric vehicles, as part of a 3,000-vehicle commitment agreed with a consortium of Dutch companies.
